The ITU Urban and Regional Planning PhD Program aims to train scholars and academics with advanced expertise in urban theory and policy, strong analytical capacity to examine urban environmental challenges, and the ability to develop alternative, creative, and wide-ranging perspectives. The program encourages candidates to connect qualitative and quantitative approaches with contemporary technologies, strengthening both methodological rigor and innovative thinking.

Within the PhD curriculum, students engage with core research areas such as urban and regional planning theories, regional development, urban systems, transportation and land-use planning, urban regeneration, environmental management, and urban quality of life. They also have the opportunity to deepen their work in current and multi-layered themes, including climate change adaptation, migration and demographic change, regional innovation and strategy, and urban morphology. The program particularly promotes the combined use of qualitative and quantitative research methods, and supports the integration of advanced planning techniques and contemporary information and communication technologies into academic research.
