Within the scope of the Istanbul Technical University Faculty of Architecture High School Summer School (itüTA), students participated in the workshop titled “Climate Action Simulation: Urban Futures in the Context of COP31,” conducted by Asst. Prof. Rumeysa Ceylan-Çalışkan, Res. Asst. Dr. Gamze Kazancı, and Res. Asst. Gamze Mestan. During the workshop, students experienced global climate negotiations and evaluated the impacts of the climate crisis on cities from the perspectives of different stakeholders.

Designed in the context of Türkiye’s role as the host of COP31 and Istanbul Technical University’s active involvement in this process, the workshop enabled students to represent public authorities, the energy sector, industry, civil society, and different country groups, and to participate in realistic negotiation processes. Through the En-ROADS Climate Simulation Model, the effects of the decisions made during the negotiations on global temperature rise were assessed in real time.

In the second part of the workshop, the negotiation outcomes were transferred to the urban scale. Students developed spatial scenarios on how climate policies could shape the future of Istanbul and other cities. In this way, the workshop addressed the relationship between global climate decisions and local planning practices through an integrated perspective.
