Education continued under the names Mühendishâne-i Berrî-i Hümâyûn, focusing on military architect-engineer training.
1884
It was transformed into Hendese-i Mülkiye Mektebi, where civilian architects and engineers were trained.
1909
It was renamed Mühendis Mekteb-i Âlisi, and the curriculum recognized civil engineering and architecture as a single profession.
1928
Renamed Yüksek Mühendis Mektebi, the education was reorganized into branches including roads, railways, waterworks, and civil engineering-architecture.
1931
The Architecture Division graduated its first cohort.
1936
The common education period was reduced from three years to two years, and differentiation in architectural specialization began through a special examination.
1939
The German scholar Ord. Prof. Dr. Gustav Oelsner, who had taught Urbanism courses at Yüksek Mühendis Mektebi, was appointed to the newly established Urbanism Chair as an Ordinarius Professor.
1940
A six-year architecture education program was introduced. Within this program, urbanism topics—previously addressed within various courses—were given a distinct and dedicated place through both coursework and practical training.
Prof. Kemal Ahmet Aru, who entered Yüksek Mühendis Mektebi as an assistant, laid the foundations of contemporary urbanism education together with Ord. Prof. Dr. Gustav Oelsner in the Urbanism Chair, established in 1946.
1941
With Law No. 4121 enacted in 1941, Yüksek Mühendis Mektebi was transferred to the Ministry of Education.
1942
Kemal Ahmet Aru received the title of Associate Professor.
1944
After the institution adopted the name Istanbul Technical University, the six-year education period was reduced to five years (ten semesters).
The Architecture Division within Yüksek Mühendis Mektebi became the Faculty of Architecture within Istanbul Technical University.
1946
Istanbul Technical University gained autonomy, and a formal chair system was established from this date onward. Within the Faculty of Architecture, the Urbanism Chair assumed a distinct and significant role as a specialized group for teaching and practice within the architecture curriculum.
Gündüz Özdeş joined the Urbanism Chair staff as an assistant.
1949
After Ord. Prof. Dr. Gustav Oelsner was invited back to Germany by the German Government for the reconstruction of Hamburg, Kemal Ahmet Aru was appointed as the head of the Urbanism Chair.
1950
Kemal Ahmet Aru received the title of Professor.
1951
Hande Suher was appointed as an assistant to the Urbanism Chair.
Ahmet Keskin was appointed as an assistant to the Urbanism Chair.
1953
Established as a higher education school affiliated with ITU, ITU Technical School was founded. Urbanism courses within the Architecture Department’s curriculum were also delivered with the support of the ITU Urbanism Chair.
1959
Ayten Çetiner joined the Urbanism Chair.
1960
Tekin Aydın joined the Urbanism Chair.
1961
Saim Beygo joined the Urbanism Chair.
1962
Gündüz Özdeş received the title of Professor.
1963
Orhan Göçer joined the Urbanism Chair.

1967
To train specialists in the discipline of urbanism and to build knowledge capacity through various academic meetings, the Urbanism Chair established the Institute of Urbanism. Gündüz Atalık joined the academic staff.
1969
ITU Technical School was transformed into the ITU Faculty of Engineering-Architecture, where parallel education was provided under ITU. In the Architecture Department, an Urbanism Chair was established with support from faculty members of the ITU Faculty of Architecture.
A two-year post-graduate program in urbanism was launched.

1973
Thirteen chairs were established within five departments. Within the Urbanism Chair—one of the five departments in the Faculty of Architecture—specialization areas were differentiated. The single Urbanism Chair was reorganized into three chairs: Planning Theory and Method, Urban Regions and Transportation, and Urban Design and Renewal.
1974
Undergraduate education in the Faculty of Architecture was reduced to four years (eight semesters), and graduate education to two years (four semesters). Prof. Dr. Gündüz Atalık was appointed as the chair head of the Urbanism Chair within the Architecture Department of the ITU Faculty of Engineering-Architecture. Dr. İsmet Okyay joined as a doctoral assistant.
1975
Dr. Vedia Dökmeci was appointed as a doctoral assistant.
1976
The post-graduate urbanism program graduated its first cohort.
Dr. Cengiz Giritlioğlu joined as a doctoral assistant.
1977
Nuran Zeren was appointed as an assistant.

Within the ITU Faculty of Engineering-Architecture, the Architecture Department (Maçka Faculty of Architecture) and the ITU Faculty of Architecture were merged at Taşkışla, and urbanism staff within ITU were consolidated.

Within the ITU Faculty of Architecture, two departments were established: Architecture and Urban and Regional Planning. Within the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, two divisions were formed: Urbanism and Regional Planning. Prof. Gündüz Özdeş was appointed as Head of Department; Prof. Hande Suher as Head of the Urbanism Division; and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Orhan Göçer as Head of the Regional Planning Division.
1983-84
In the 1983–1984 academic year, the Department of Urban and Regional Planning began its undergraduate education.
Graduate education was affiliated with the ITU Institute of Social Sciences under the heading “Architecture and Urbanism Division.”
